The Best Baby Shower Gift I Ever Received

When my husband and I were expecting our first baby, a neighbor threw a baby shower in honor of our first child. How exciting to open beautifully wrapped gifts to help care for the baby that we are looking forward to meeting! I received many beautiful baby gifts – pastel baby blankets, hooded baby towels, baby picture frames to name a few, but the most unique shower gift that I will always remember was from my Mother-in-law. A small baby shower gift, with a card that read “A gift I hope you will never use!”...

What gift could someone give to an expectant mom that they need but hopefully would never use?!? When I opened her baby shower gift, I found an instant read baby thermometer - ten years ago - it was cutting edge baby technology! What a clever idea – something that every parent will use and needs! When looking for a baby shower gift – it is best to find somthing unique. Unique baby shower gifts add fun to the shower. Once that expectant mom has opened 3 outfit sets with booties, it is fun to have a unique baby shower gift to oohh and ahh over. So how do you come up with such a unique baby shower gift without breaking your bank?

For starters, some of the very best baby shower gifts are centered on a theme. Choosing a theme for your baby shower gift allows you to choose some smaller baby gifts and give them as a thoughtful present. For example, instead of giving a rattle, baby booties, baby outfit and a matching bottle, why not give a baby bathtub filled with a duck hooded towel and matching washcloth, baby soap, baby lotion, rubber ducky and a bath time story. On a card print Baby “Clark’s Baby Spa” (replacing Clark’s with the baby’s last name or baby’s first name.)

Another way to make your baby shower gift unique is give hint on the card as to the gift inside as shown on the example above. Be creative, for example, when giving a grouping of baby books enclose a card in the gift box that says “The “Smith” Baby Library”. Or what about giving a basket with a sign that says “Johnson Emergency Room Supplies” filled with a Parents Health Book for Baby, Fast Read Thermometer, Cotton Balls, Cotton-tipped Swabs, Hot Water Bottle, Boo Boo Bunny, a small flashlight (to look in the baby’s mouth), Tweezers, Cute-printed Band-Aids, Antibiotic Cream and more!

Finally, a poem included with a baby shower gift always adds a nice touch! Some gifts come with poems – especially more traditional baby gifts like baby bonnets, booties and bibs. You could search on the internet or in books for a sweet poem to include with your baby shower gift. Resist the urge to frame the poem. Although great for the nursery now, when the baby is older – the gift will likely find its way to a storage closet and not in the baby’s memory book.

When shopping for a unique baby show gift, it may take some time to put together a fun gift, but it is well worth your time and effort – your baby shower gift can be a gift that is used and remembered for years to come!
